?
For each written paper, your ASSIGNMENT is to assume the role of a Management
Consultant whose task is to prepare recommendations for the Board of Directors of
the Firm in each case.
?
The question you are to address is ?What should the company do next, in terms of IT
STRATEGY.?
?
You are to take all the facts in the case and use them as input information for your
analysis and recommendations.
?
The first HEADING for your paper must be ?RECOMMENDATIONS?. Here you state
the most important recommendations you have for the Board. Be specific ? what should
they do?
?
The second HEADING must be ?RATIONALE?. Here you present the core arguments in
favor of your recommendations. Why should they do it?
?
The third HEADING must be ?BACKGROUND?. Here you present additional facts in
the case that support your recommendations, beyond the core arguments included under
RATIONALE.
?
Do not just summarize the case. The Board of Directors already knows the facts in the
case.
?
Your job is to synthesize these facts, distill out a set of key recommendations (1, 2, or 3)
about what the company should do in the future (from the end of the case forward);
convince the Board your recommendations are well-founded
?
Use the facts as supporting evidence for your recommendations. You are trying to get the
Board to spend money to implement your ideas.
?
Board members are busy; they do not have time to read all the things that are given to
them. You have to make it easy for them!
?
The Board consists of diverse individuals of different backgrounds. You do not know how
much depth any one member has in any particular topic.
?
Give enough information to make the decision in simple, straightforward language, direct
and to the point.

CASE ANALYSIS IDEAS
The following are not all-inclusive ideas for conducting a case analysis. However, they do show the
minimum expectations in terms of case evaluation. You may have other issues that you wish to explore
with a specific case.
Evaluate the SETTING
Review the setting of the case. When ? what is the time frame of the case? Competitive
environment (who are the competitors, what are their profiles, etc.) Governmental/regulatory setting ?
what?s happening in this arena that may have an impact. What are the global issues that may have an
impact?
Evaluate the PROBLEM(s)
What are the symptoms that are discussed? What is the REAL problem, or problems that cause
these symptoms? How do these problems related to the setting that you have laid out in the first section?
Paper Format (Use these Headings in the same order):
1-RECOMMENDATIONS
What are the recommendations that you will make to address the problems that are laid out in the
second section. Be sure to anchor your recommendations to one or more specific problems.
2-RATIONALE
What is the rationale (support through logical argument) for each of your recommendations made
to address the specific problems that result from the setting that you have discussed?
3-BACKGROUND
Are there any additional considerations that influenced your thinking? What other ideas did you
consider to address each of the problems and why did you choose each specific recommendation in lieu of
other approaches?
