I’m trying to answer some questions from an article about the iodine clock reaction using these reagents: Potassium iodate (KIO3), Sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3), Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) – this is the catalyst, and a starch indicator.
This process takes place like this:
IO3- + 3HSO3- -slow—-> I- + 3SO4 2- + 3H+
IO3- + 5I- + 6H+ -slow—> 3I2 + 3H2O
I2 + HSO3- + H2O -fast—-> 2I- + SO4 2- + 3H+
I2 + starch —-> blue-black complex
