Problems and Promise is a documentary produced by Ron Rudaitis. His presentation of
the exploration of the phenomenon known as suburbia is very dynamic and thought-provoking.
The documentary depicts the genesis and history, political and social changes, as well as the developmental challenges and sustainable solutions in Suburban America. It narrates life in the
America suburban. The documentary talks about the issues and opportunities that mark the
changing demand of the individuals who live in the American Suburbs. This documentary has a
stringent aim of ensuring that the suburbs are better places for the living of the individuals. The
documentary also identifies the issues that surround the suburbs and works towards ensuring that
they grow to become economically viable regions and have sustainable economies. The documentary, therefore, targets the society in general as it states the manner in which the places can
be made better. This, on the other hand, requires the participation of various people in the society
instead of just single units. Therefore, the audience is the whole population that is educated on
the suburbs and the opportunities that are available in these places (Suburban America, 2012).
The documentary serves two purposes. It presents itself as an educational documentary in
the aspect of informing the population about life in the American suburbs. This documentary also
serves an inspirational purpose as it speaks about how life can be made better in these regions.
The central message in the documentary, therefore, is the available opportunities in the suburbs
and also the problems that are faced by the individuals who live in these areas. The director of
the documentary brings about the central theme of opportunity in the suburbs. These opportunities are presented in various ways that are very easy to be understood by the general population
(Suburban America, 2012).
The topic of the American suburbs has been a very rampant topic in the social media
platforms. Therefore, even before watching the documentary, I was aware of the fact that there
are various issues that are addressed about the American suburbs and the push for a better life in
these places. My expectations of the video were met, as I expected to see the manner in which
the suburban life has evolved over time and the experiences of the individuals who live in these
areas. Therefore, the documentary matches the full expectations that I had. The issues of the suburbs made me develop a model of questions that I had to seek when watching the documentary.
The issue of how the areas can be improved was one of the issues that I dominantly thought over.
On the other hand, I was questioning the availability of various opportunities in the areas. There-
fore, on watching the movie, I came to know of the different opportunities that are available in
the suburbs and also the various challenges that are faced by those who live in these regions
(Suburban America, 2012).
The documentary has a main area of concern, and that is the American suburbs. The documentary critically addresses the manner in which individuals live in the suburbs and also the
area. These, on the other hand, provide a full analysis of the problems and the opportunities that
are available in these regions. The documentary is about life in the suburban areas and also the
manner in which various factors are in play in the parts. Therefore, the documentary offers an
eventful narration of life in the fields. This is tightly coupled with the interviewing of high profile individuals from the suburban regions. Some of the factors that are addressed in the documentary include social and political evolution, infrastructure related problems, economic viability, transportation and the environmental sustainability of the regions. The documentary also
shows the interviews that are conducted by experts, and they are questioned about the regions.
The interviews are majorly about the similarities and the differences in the rural and urban places
that exist in the American states and the economy as a whole. The documentary, on the other
hand, is filmed in various suburban regions in America. Therefore, it addresses the problems that
are experienced by the individuals who live in the suburban areas. These areas are situated in
various states, therefore, diversity in challenges and opportunities are addressed (Suburban
The best part of the documentary according to me is the part where the director analyses
the manner in which politics influences the suburbs. The political landscape is also affected by
the suburbs as notably a greater percentage of the population resides in these regions. On the
other hand, the documentary goes through various political beliefs and gives a summary of how
the suburbs have been a very influencing aspect of the political landscape. This is critically analyzed by the analysis of various political images and icons that have an effect on the suburbs.
The democrats and republicans are also linked to the political play in these regions. Therefore,
the director exhausts the political aspect of life in the suburbs. The documentary has taught me
that life in the suburbia can be improved in a joint effort from all the stakeholders in the society.
Therefore, a joint effort is necessary to ensure that life in these regions is ameliorated, and the individuals have favorable standards of living. A surprising lesson that I learnt from the documentary on the other side was the fact that the suburbs are a very critical place for the political future
of the country as the population in these areas is half the total population in the country. Therefore, a very significant number of Americans live in the suburbs as opposed to a previous thought
that the regions are occupied by few. The documentary, however, does not discuss the future
trends expected in these regions. However, I would greatly recommend the documentary to students who are taking this class. This is because the documentary educates about life in the suburbs and inspires one to make a change (Suburban America, 2012).
