Cultivation Theory Application Paper
Due Monday, April 11 by 5:00 pm
George Gerbner argues that heavy television viewing creates an exaggerated belief in a mean,
scary world. You are to apply the theory to your television viewing habits (usually?i.e., are you
considered a Light TV Type, Heavy TV Type, or unclassified by Gerbner?s theoretical design)
and then to the ?required? application parameters in which you watch at least 3 hours (three,
one-hour TV shows or the equivalent?or more).
1. Paper should be written using APA format and reference style guidelines (see your notes
from COMM 200). Specifically, use 12? font, Times New Roman font, double spaced, 1?
margins on all pages, no contractions, write in active voice, use headers and paging
(upper right corner) formatted inside the margin (not in the text of the paper), use APA intext citation form, provide a cover page with Title, your name, due date, course title, a
Running head, headers and pagination, and provide a References page (cite text and any
external sources?my lectures come from the text so do not cite me).
2. Introduction section should elaborate the theory and explain the goal of the paper. Be
sure to Bold key concepts and terms from the text. You should cite the text anytime you
bold a term. Be sure that you define the term or concept and then explain what each
mean vis-?-vis examples.
3. In the introduction preview, please note whether you are a heavy or light TV viewer.
Explain what the theory predicts about your attitudes about the world being violent.
Elaborate what the theory would predict you would see on TV if you were a light or
heavy viewer. Identify what type of shows you watch (scripted or not scripted, primetime or non prime-time, theme of show?sports TV news, drama, cartoon, comedy,
special topic, reality, etc.), what medium you use to watch the shows (online, DVR, as
televised, etc?). Then elaborate on how your viewing habits would be viewed by the
theory.
4. Provide Gerbner?s definition of Violence. Then provide your own definition of Violence.
Create a Violence Index in which you chart your TV viewing from Friday through
Sunday (or over a period of time). Identify title of show, network, violent acts as defined
by Gerbner, and then violent acts as defined by you. Identify for each the perpetrator of
the violence, victim of the violence, and nature of the violence.
5. Write two to three good conclusion paragraphs regarding the implications of your
findings. Discuss the shortcomings of the theory (e.g., are there other reasons why you
view the world as scary other than because you watch a lot of TV, or do you view the
world as scary and do not watch TV four or more hours per day on average, or do you
watch a lot of TV and do not consider the world as scary).
6. Reference page
7. Violence Index Chart (this can be handwritten if you have a hard type writing charts). Be
sure this page has headers and paging (and the Table header form is used).
