1) I really enjoyed the reading this, especially The Ten Primal Blueprint Laws. Knowing basic ways to stay healthy is very important. The saying “you are what you eat” is better described in the first two laws. Of course the book doesn’t flat out say that but to me it is evident. Most of the fad diets today are animal and plant based as well as avoiding poisonous things such as man made foods. It was a nice reminder that the food that we put into our bodies should be made of a single ingredient. Many times I think that people of the United States let the fast paced lifestyles get us into trouble with food. We want what is easy at the moment not taking into consideration our health of the future. The one thing that I learned from these laws is to move frequent at a slow pace. It was explained that ancient people enjoyed leisure often but they were not sedentary. It was noted that moving at a low level of intensity often is the prevention for chronic disease.
2) The concierge practice shows freedom within the health care system to make a practice everything the health care provider wants it to be since the doctor charges the patients directly rather than billing the insurance company. It allows one to provide care to their patients rendering versatility, flexibility, and opportunity within their medical practice. As Dr. Umbehr stated, most doctors became doctors to help people and do no harm physically or financially. This design of delivering health care signifies as a highly customizable platform to provide services and enables a practice to remain independent.
Having a membership of a set amount of fifty dollars a month with a concierge practice gives unlimited physician visits without a copay, and all office procedures are included. Coverage with membership means free EKGs, Holter, DEXA, ultrasound, spirometry, rapid strep antigen test, cryotherapy, removal of lesions, minor surgical procedures, sutures, joint injections, and biopsies is advantageous to the patient. Concierge medicine is a way to combat soaring health insurance costs for a patient by cutting out the middle man whether it is the insurance company or the government.
The direct care curriculum seems to have health care going back to the basics of helping patients with more of a personalized medical care practice and putting priorities back in order by providing a “VALUE” for the patients. Concierge medicine through membership benefits works to provide enrolled patients in a quest toward better health. By improving efficiency, decreasing bureaucracy, and ultimately providing savings without co-pays, deductibles, or co-insurance fees associated with insurance based practices. Recognizing there is no easy fix with health care along with pros and cons of having concierge medicine; nonetheless, it provides an option of how one obtains health care with a choice and what is right for them.
